Stop Calling It Your Baby

Most people assume I have two children.
After all, each year, our Christmas photo shows only two girls.
However, for the last 11 years, I thought I had three.
And no, I’m not talking about my four-legged puppy, Tucker.

Since 2011, I have referred to Rustic Cuff as my “baby.”
What started as a hobby (baby) blossomed into a toddler and is on its way to becoming a full-fledged teenager.
And this is precisely how I have continuously referred to this company.
As my baby, toddler, or almost teenager.
Until last year.

A friend and mentor of mine took note of my frequent use of the affectionate term “baby” when referring to my RC venture. Sensing my emotional attachment, he said, “Jill, you need to stop calling your business your baby.” He shared with me that such emotional attachment could impede my ability to move forward with new God-anointed and God-appointed paths.

It was at that moment I had an epiphany.
I realized that although I love Rustic Cuff and am so grateful God has entrusted this business into an unlikely entrepreneur’s hands, I am simply the vessel…the conduit through which God uses to connect and give hope to others.

This moment of clarity brought to light an important truth – our propensity to cling to the familiar can hinder our capacity to embrace change.
We hold so tightly to God’s gifts that we become unwilling to move into a fresh, new season.

When we trust that God’s ultimate plan for our life is far superior to anything we can dream or imagine, we can release our grasp on things we believe are indispensable. Our mindset should be that we are stewards entrusted with responsibilities rather than being possessive owners unwilling to release back to God’s hands when He is ready to give us something new.

I still adore Rustic Cuff, and as far as I know, it is not going anywhere anytime soon!
Yet, I have stopped calling it my baby.
When you have open hands to all of the gifts God has given you, He will see a heart of humility and gratitude and will trust you with more.
After all, you can only see to the corner.
So, why wouldn’t you trust the one who can see all the way around the corner and back again?
He does EVERYTHING for your benefit.
You will find freedom when you start resting in that TRUTH.
