Feeling Stuck? Shrink the Step.

Feeling Stuck? Shrink the Step.

Jill Donovan

Yesterday, I opened my junk drawer and closed it like I had just witnessed a crime.
It was utter chaos.

Maybe it’s the random keys that go to absolutely nothing we still own.
Or the pair of sunglasses with one missing lens.
From sometime during the Reagan administration.

Every time I think, Today’s the day I finally tackle it, I get overwhelmed.
So instead of starting small, I don’t start at all.
It’s just a drawer.
But that feeling?
It shows up so easily in a lot of other areas too.

I heard someone recently say:
If you can’t reach your goal, it might be because your first step isn’t small enough.

That was one of those stop-and-think moments.

Perhaps it’s not because we’re incapable.
Or undisciplined.
Or even lazy.
What if it’s just that the first step we set for ourselves is still too big?

We set these giant, beautiful goals with giant, overwhelming expectations.
Like we’re supposed to leap from our current reality into a brand-new version of ourselves by Tuesday.
And when we can’t, we say, I just can’t do it.

But maybe it’s not that you can’t.
Maybe you just didn’t make the first step small enough.

Instead of writing a book, maybe the first step is just opening a blank document and typing the title.
Instead of trying to let go, maybe it’s throwing away one thing that’s keeping you tied to the past.
Instead of getting in shape, maybe it’s walking to the mailbox and back.

Instead of reading the Bible more, maybe it’s reading one verse and thinking about it while you brush your teeth.
Instead of decluttering everything, maybe it’s throwing away just one thing you know you don’t need.
Instead of trying to understand everything to get closure, maybe it’s just saying, God, You understand. And that’s enough for today.

We underestimate the power of momentum because we’re too busy trying to create magic in one giant, heroic leap.
But what if the most magical thing you do today is take one really tiny, almost embarrassingly simple step?

Don’t let the size of the dream talk you out of beginning.
Just shrink the first move.
Make it so small that it’s impossible not to take it.
And then take the next one.
And the next.
Sometimes the breakthrough isn’t in trying harder. It’s in starting smaller.

God never asked us to leap the mountain in one bound.
He just asks us to take the next step with Him.
One small, obedient, quiet step of faith at a time.
Because even the tiniest steps, when they’re led by Him, can carry us exactly where we’re meant to go.
